Saudi Arabian Dish Called KABSAH

June 11, it was our second day in riyadh, hungry, sleepy and tired. All of us feel exhausted and no plan of doing anything, but to eat. One of our colleague suggest to go to a nearby restaurant and buy kabsah or eat there as well. Its 11:00 O Clock in the morning,  I feel the hot temperature outside the villa for the very first time, for we arrived 2:00 AM.The sun really strikes and i fel the burning sensation on my skin. I am thinging it over 40 degrees and its really uncomfortable.

Since our mission is to get food and eat, I neglect the fact that we don't have Eqama, and is walking under the HOT sunny Noon. At last after about 15 Minutes walk, weve arrive to the restaurant that serves kabsah. We order at around 11:20 and was told that it takes around 15 minutes to prepare. The team agread and we waited. Time pass by and its already 11:45...11:50... 11:55  its over half an hour and the food is not yeat ready. We asked the server about it and was told to wait. Another unfortunate things happen, at 12:00 Noon its Sala Time (Prayer Time) and all stores are obliged to close. We were told to just carry our order out of the restaurant. Six person, very hungry, tires, sleepy and agitated has no other choice but to carry our food and walk again under HOT Sunny Noon for 15 minutes again back to villa.

Things ive noticed, there is no utensils. Our carry out food consist of yellow colloredoily rice, a roasted chicken part (either a breast or a thigh part), half cut onions, one small cup of salsa, and 1 jalapeno (raw). Never in my dream that i will eat uncooked chilli and a fresh onions, but i did.

I am of those " maarte person" when it comes to rice. I am proud to say that even i came from a poor family, my parents able to provide good food on the table.  My mother os very particular with regards to rice. She make skure that the rice is smooth in texture and white. This attitude was pass to all the children  and we are all very particular in selecting rice.

Kabsah Rice, as ive tasted the first time, was like a fried rice and has a lot of spices in it. Im not sure what are those, but it taste awful. It makes the rice becomes yellow and it smells funny. The rice being used is a Wagwag rice. When you eat it , it is comparable to the rice that was not dried properly, stocked for over a year and a lot of insects like roaches passing by before milling.

If im not very hungry, i dont think i can continue eating, in fact my appetite to eat disappear. I am very sorry but i can't finish my food, and needs to throw the leftover. From that time on, I promise w will never eat kabsah again.

Days passed by, and still we have no Iqama. Its very deppressing experience, and i cant find a way how to manage it. Luckyly after 15 days of doing nothing, we were told to work in the company;s call center for the meantime. I am thinking that at least we will get ourself busy and has the previledge to use the internet.

Second day in a call cener, that one of the boss treat us a Kabsah this time he bought it from SHAWAYA  .This time, i dont have the right to complain for we are really hungry and has a tight budget. Food is already in front of you and all you need to do is eat.

To my surprice the food, taste differently this time. The rice is quite the same, but there is no after taste like the one before. The chicken is roasted, awell done and  spicy, which i really like, there is a macaroni included. I dontk know how they cooked it, but i have to admit its really good this time. I eat my words, Ive break my promise that i will never eat kabsah again. This time i am thingking that when i get home, i will bring some spices used to cook Kabsah and will do my own dish for my family to try.

Its really a great experience. You can try one for yourself, in fact its is not expensive. 6 Riyals per serving if if your not a heavy eater, it is enough for 2 person.

I love these songs...

"Crazy Over You"
Dedicated to my Wife.

I fell in love with you,
T'was like a dream come true
And my love for you will never end oh no
Was such a special night
You lay right by my side
And I told you things I never told a soul
And now that I have you babe
I promise I'll never leave
Cuz you are the only one that makes my life complete...
[Chorus:]
And I'm,
Crazy over you,
I dont know what to do,
I'm Crazy over you...
A love that never ends
You're more than just a friend
And my heart and soul I'll always give to you,
The only in my life
Someday you'll be my wife,
And I'll be with you until the end of time...
And now that I have you babe
I promise I'll never leave
Cuz you are the only one that makes my love complete...
[Chorus]
It doesnt matter what you say or do
Because I love you (And I know you love me too)
Love me, kiss me, and hold me in your arms
Lets me know you're crazy over me
And I'm Crazy over you
Cuz you are the only one,
To make my life complete...
[Chorus until end]

Hanggang may kailanman
Kahapon at ngayon
Ay may bukas na daratnan
Hanggang may kailanman
Ang bawat sandali
Ay panahong nilalaan
Hanggang ako'y kailangan
Hanggang ikaw ay nariyan
Ako't ikaw hanggang may kailanman
Hanggang may saan man
Ang dito at doon
Ay may landas na tagpuan
Hanggang may kailanman
Ang bawat alaala ay ating pagsaluhan
Hanggang sa kalungkutan
Hindi kita iiwanan
Kasama mo hanggang may kailanman

[Chorus:]
Kailan pa man
Sayo lamang magmamahal
Kailan pa man
Mangangakong magtatagal
Mula noon hanggang ngayon
Ikaw lamang
Ako para sayo
Hanggang may kailanman
Hanggang sa kalungkutan
Hindi kita iiwanan
Kasama mo hanggang may kailanman
[Chorus:]
Kailan pa man
Sayo lamang magmamahal
Kailan pa man
Mangangakong magtatagal
Mula noon hanggang ngayon
Ikaw lamang
Ako para sayo
Hanggang may kailanman
[Chorus:]
Kailan pa man
Sayo lamang magmamahal
Kailan pa man
Mangangakong magtatagal
Noon hanggang ngayon
Ikaw lamang
Ako para sayo
Hanggang may kailanman

Mary, did you know
That your baby boy
Would someday walk on water?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
That your baby boy
Has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered
Will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy
Has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby
You've kissed the face of God.
The blind will see
The deaf will hear
The dead will live again
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of the Lamb
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know
That your baby boy
Will one day rule the nations?
Did you know
That your baby boy
Is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding
Is the Great I Am

Merry Christmas with Love
By: Clay Aiken

She leaned with her head on the window
Watching evergreen bend in the snow
Remembering Christmas the way it had been
So many seasons ago.
When children would reach for their stockings
And open the presents they found
The lights on the tree would shine bright in their eyes
Reflecting the love all around.
But this year there's no one to open the gifts
No reason for trimming the tree
And just as a tear made its way to the floor
She heard voices outside start to sing.
Merry Christmas to all who may dwell here
Merry Christmas if even just one
May the joy of the season surround you
Merry Christmas with love.
Carolers sang as she opened the door
Faces of friends in the crowd
And all of the shadows of lonely reminders
Driven away by the sound.
Now the heart that for years had been silent
Was suddenly filled with a song
As she clung to their hands like a child in the night
She found her self singing along.
Merry Christmas to all who may dwell here
Merry Christmas if even just one
May the joy of the season surround you
Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all who may dwell here
Merry Christmas if even just one
May the joy of the season surround you
Merry Christmas with love

An Embarrasing and Funny Experience in Riyadh.

July 05,2011 - 4 AM.

At last we received our first salary. We feel excited because at last we can send money to our family in the Philippines and buy some important stuff we need. After getting the salary, the group decided to visit Panda (http://www.panda.com.sa/) which is open 24 Hours, except Salah Time, to buy some daily needs. 5:00 AM and we start walking going to Panda. It takes about 15 min to get there by foot, the good thing is that it is early morning and the temperature is not that hot.

We started to pick up the things we need like, rice cooker, rice, pans, eating utensils and the like. 5:30, were done and headed to check-out counter to pay. We spent over 300SR - We decided to get home, and headed out the door. Our Collegues is already waiting outside with a push with them. Since we bought a couple of Rice bags, it is not that easy to carry out by hand. We decide to bring the Cart near the Road, and we see one of our Kabayans doing some Paint Job in the Carpark of PANDA. We asked if we could bring the Supermarket Cart on the other side of the road and he said " Go ahead". and so we went.
We pushed the cart towards main road and headed home. Sand and dust is al over my shoes and my pants, but i dont care, i just need to go home coz we havent got a sleep yet.

We bring the push cart with us to the villa, and its quite funny for all the cars we come accross, the drivers is staring at us. Its really quite embarassing. I dont think i can make this if we are in the Phillippines. Try to imagine that its over 1 Kilometer from Panda to Villa. And We need to Cross the Highway... WTF. Really emabarrassing. I am also afraid that somebody will question us why we brought the cart that far, and as of this moment we dont have EQAMA yet and we are already stroolling the street of riyadh. If the police will know, we will be on jail, thats for sure.

Due to some stones and rough roads, our carts is not moving smoothly. Some of the eggs we bought was dropped and damage all throughout the travel. I think 5 pcs. Its really annoying and a bery tiring experience. I am thinking , its really better if we get a cab for 10 SR. Than walking with a cart.I hope i got a chance to take a photo in order for me to share it with you, but heres a photo similar to what it looks like. Of course a grocery is inside the cart and not that boy. But the Road seems similar.

I promise to myself, that will never happen again. Unless unavoidable circumstances arise.

A SAD STORY...

This is based on my opinion and the story i've heard from other people in villa. You are free to judge who looses and who won. But in my opinion, nobody wins.

Last week , on our way to our temporary work in the call center, while waiting for the store assignement. Ive seen a lot of  Indians downstair on a chaos and keep on discussing something. Im new in the kingdom and i have no idea what are they talking about. I have very little knowledge about arabic, and they are also speaking on their native language. Some fellow Filipino told us that they are the 30 plus Indians  that  was in Riyadh for over 3 months now, doing nothing, waiting for their papers, and never received any single cents from the company. Ive also learned that they ate only 1 meal a day to survive. Families of the said 30 plus Indians already complained the agency who sent them to Riyadh and the Indian Embassy is already working for them to be sent home.

I am trying to imagine the 3 months doing nothing in the villa and is waiting for the papers is a hell for me. As of this moment, weve been here for over 3 weeks and i fell bored. I dont see myself doing nothing for so long. Operations Manager and the Area Supervisor was on the news about the chaos and it really alarms me. Decision came, and learned that all the 30 plus Indians will be sent home and will receive the 3 Months salary.

I am thinking, they got here in saudi to work, for them to send money to their family. How sad it is that it never happens, instead they experience this kind of maltreatment. Supposed they are to receive a 1200 SR per month as a delivery drivers. but another information ive learned that they will be paid only 800 SR per month.

When we came back home that night, i've seen 3 Saudi National Guarding the Villa, and not allowing the 30 Plus Indians to enter the Villa. Hows that? its 2:30 in the morning and its not that HOT outside, but still i dont see the LOGIC shoooing them out of the villa. They are human beings and need shelter. I know theres a lot of street children in the Philippines or Street Families who lives  on the roads with no blankets or shelter. Weather in Saudi is different, even not humid, the temperature is quite hot and a lot of sands in the air as well. I dont think i can challenge myself in sleeping outside of the villa, even just for 1 night.

When we asked the guard/caretaker about why they are there outside, he said " go up" mafe muskila = means Go Up , no problem. Good thing that it never happens to our Kabayans. I know that there are also a lot of unfair treatment, but i dont want to be that worse.Next day and same thing happen, I dont know if those people got a sleep in thinking of their situation, its really unacceptable to not allowing them to get into their rooms.

The last time ive heard, they are already on a schedule to be sent home, ive seen them wore their travelling clothes and their luggage is ready. Ive seen the Bus who supposed to pick them, but the Bus leave the premise with no one. We are also on our way to work that time 9PM and no idea what happens to them.

The following day, ive heard that they were transfered to another villa, and still didnt received their 3 months pay. I am hoping that evrything should be settled this time, and the company will send them home as soon as possible.

Working in a Middle East is not that easy, especially if you dont have papers with you. You need a lot of courage and Faith in God, in order for you to finish your contract and eventually went home with enough money for your family.

I dont know who to blaims, but any Human being should be treated fairly at all times.

LIFE in RIYADH, KSA

Continued...

Laundry: Company provides 3 washing machines with seperate driers. This will be used by our kabayans as well as other races like indians and bangladesh. I choose to do handwash instead of using the washing machine for sanitation purposes. But i need to use the driers to dry the clothes. Unfortunately sun drying is not possible due to sand and ashes in the air. As what i have mentioned above, the water is lukewarm and a bit salty, in this regard there is a tendency that you will need more than enough for the laundry soap. Costly? nope.. Not at all, soap her is a bit cheaper than in the philippines, make sure to use TIDE and a fabric conditioner.

Kitchen:  There are 1 Kitchen provided for each floor,  A 4 Burner Electric Stove and a sink. Of course you need tyo provide your own cooking utensils like pans, or caserole. etc. If you are a newbie, means you have just arrive, you should have the courage to borrow these utinsils from your kabayan. The good thing they will even offer Eating utensils and condiments. Make sure ( Huwag abusado).  Fortunate for me i have around 2K  in PHP left on my pocket that ive changed for SR currency. Means that i have around 150 SR in my pocket. But then its not enough for one month. company provides the 200 SR as a meal allowance and we tried to buy any available food that will be sufficient for the whole month and buy a water heater for coffee ( im a coffee addict). Since no enough budget yet for a rice cooker, we decided to just use the rice cooker of our kabayan ( Pasabay) in cooking rice. Hoping that after getting the first salary we can buy our own and cook our own food to save more.
Comfort Room/ Wash Room/ Bathroom/Toilet,  whatever you call it : There are 4 toilet  available for each floor, due to some water shortage, we need to have containers inside to store water. Shower is installed, and this is very beneficial if you are a fan of a HOT shower, but if not,  you need to store water first inside the room and use it in the morning.

Transportation: Company has its own delivery vehicle to deliver their products. This is also used to transport all the employee to their respective branch of assignment. Peugot 206 or 306 - http://www.peugeot.com/en/products/cars/peugeot-206.aspx and susuki alto -  or susuki celerio  is being used.
